In terms of art, I have to say this was a pretty proud moment.
All cartoonists have that list of things that are easy enough to put into a script, but come time to draw it, panic ensues. Crowd scenes, bicycles, and horses are among the more well-documented… but there’s also the circular stairwell… a complicated device indeed.
Taking my time and making use of photo references made the process less painful than I expected… and as the story goes, the stairway breaks apart, becoming a bit less complicated in the process. It didn’t really feel like a cheat, though, as having the surreal events take over in an organic fashion was a challenge in itself. I also had to put all those steps, speedlines, and black swirlies in there without turning things into a jumbled mess. (particularly tough in the “well that’s fine” panel)
All in all, pretty fun… after about two years of working on Chapter 15, I was really beginning to enjoy drawing the swirly black hair effects, and surely this comic was the swirly black climax.
To accomplish the funky effect in Otra’s hair in the final panel, I started by airbrush shading it like normal, then I copied the layer to its own file and reduced the color range down to 6, then copied it back. Another rather stupidly simple technique. A lot of coloring in chapter 12 was done that way too.
On to the French:
Proper in-comic credit was given to Dave & Giz this time, as this is their last one. The dialogue I gave Dave went as follows:
"A goddamn sneak attack from behind. Friggin’ pussy sidekicks"
"Kick their asses, Winter!"
"Yeah! Let’s remove his brain from its head, shove it up its ass, then smash his brainy ass to pieces!"
…ssooo yeah the original dialogue is pretty crass this time, rather than being fairly clean and having them add it in the translation. Thus the final translation is more direct. “Botte lur le Cul” is pretty much literally Quebecois for “Kick their ass” although the final first line had Yumi calling the sidekicks “shit-eating shit eaters” or something like that… heeh.
"Cibouaire" is also new, as it’s another one of those words with no real English translation… but it is, according to Dave, Giz’s main contribution to this translation, as it’s her favorite Quebec swear word.
The flashback at the start shows us exactly what happened after #687 and is more or less the last piece of the puzzle. And so ends my first major attempt at out-of-sequence storytelling. All things considered, not bad.
The final fight is here
